Strategy: Interoperability
•There are 6 ways to achieve interoperability in a system:
•
•
1.Swap radios
2.
2.Use talkaround frequency
3.
3.Use municipal mutual aid frequencies
Speaking Points
1. Swap Radios
•Swapping radios is the low-tech version of interoperability.  It allows you to hear and speak with other partners but is limited by available equipment and extra bulk.

2. Talkaround Frequency
•Limited by range, equipment and preplanning
•A talkaround frequency is a frequency that has been already set aside for use by multiple responders at a scene.  It does not use a repeater and is limited by preplanning (all responders must have the frequency preprogrammed into their radios) and distance.

3. Mutual Aid Channels
•Commonly available
•Limited by equipment, preplanning and susceptibility to overload
•Mutual aid channels are talkaround channels supported by repeaters.  They must be preplanned also, but are less limited by distance.  They are vulnerable to overload, however, if too many responders start using the same channel.
