What about the technology
the ideal system would use? What
should it look like?
•It should be able to come with you wherever you need to be – outdoors,
deep in buildings, etc.. It should
also have a large coverage area without “dead spots” where you cannot use the
equipment
•It should be reliable. Things
get dropped, bumped, etc. frequently in the chaos of a disaster.
•You can’t depend on an electrical outlet in a disaster without a
generator and batteries that have a short life will run out quickly.
•You’ll have lots of other things to do and carry, so the technology
can’t be heavy or bulky
•Sometimes you need to share confidential information. Your technology should be able to keep
others from listening in.
•Communication is about more than phone conversations. The more your technology can do (e-mail,
fax, access the internet, send files, etc.) the more useful it is to you.
•Everyone has limited funds.
The ideal technology doesn’t help you if you can’t afford it.
