About MCPH
History
The
creation of the Maine Center for Public Health is due to the vision
and hard work of many individuals. Public health leaders in Maine
recognized the need for a non-governmental organization to
complement the work of committed but over-stretched state and local
public health agencies and partners.
In an
attempt to address this need, the Maine State Legislature
established the Maine Center for Public Health (MCPH), a private
non-profit 501c(3) organization in 1996.
In
the Fall of 1999, MCPH opened the doors of its home in Augusta,
Maine and individuals representing major health care providers,
managed care organizations, universities, Maine-based foundations,
and state government served on the Board of Directors.
The
Board of Directors has expanded its representative sectors to
include community health organizations and local public health
departments.
The Maine Center
for Public Health is one of more than a dozen state-level public
health institutes around the country. A Public Health
Institute (PHI) is a multi-sector entity able to function as a
convener to improve health status and foster innovations in health
systems. To learn more about Public Health Institutes go to
the National Network of Public Health Institutes website:
www.nnphi.org.
In March of 2006,
the Board of Directors adopted a new vision, mission, and strategic
direction for the MCPH as follows:
Vision
Our vision is
for
Maine
to attain its goal of becoming the healthiest state in the Nation.
Mission
Our mission is
to improve the health of Maine people by increasing knowledge,
influencing policy, and advancing high quality public health
practice.
